Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr Celebration
Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr Celebration
Every year, the Center for Diversity and Cultural Enrichment, student leaders and several other campus offices coordinate programs to celebrate the life and work of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. We always try to explore what we have learned in the world around us (historically and present day) and how these learning experiences help us to understand the diverse communities that we live in.
The observance and programming around Rev. Martin Luther King Jr and Peace and Social Justice Week provides us with an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the university’s commitment to diversity.
Programs:
Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr Convocation
When: Monday, January 30, 2012 at 11 am
Where: Veterans Hall, Ellison Campus Center
We are delighted to have Ernest G. Green as this year’s key note speaker. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Green earned his high school diploma from Central High School in Little Rock. He and eight other black students were the first to integrate Central High, following the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education that declared segregation illegal. They later would become known as the "Little Rock Nine." Green then went on to receive his bachelor’s in social science and masters in sociology from Michigan State University. He also received honorary doctorates from Michigan State University, Tougaloo College and Central State University. We are delighted to have him as our key note speaker for this year’s event and we would appreciate your involvement this year.
