1870 The Board of Education approves plans for the enlargement of the Broad Street normal school building.
1871 Salem Normal School - circa. 1873The "completion" of construction is celebrated on June 30th; the capacity of the school rises to 210 students. Actually, due to cost overruns, the third floor is not completed until 1873. At that time, capacity rises to 246 students. The Library is remodeled to house 10,000 books.

Drawing, hygiene, and physiology are added to the core of subjects tested for admission.

1872 Hagar adds a new category of student to the Advanced Program; the "Special Student" category attracts experienced teachers and recent graduates of private colleges to a one-year individualized program that leads to a certificate.
1873 The class admitted in September brings enrollment over 200 for the first time.
1876 Isaac Osbun, the first full-time male teacher, is hired to teach physics and general science.
