In 1980, the first Academic Convocation is held. The Salem State College Series begins in November; Gerald Ford is the first speaker. The Board of Regents approves the masters in social work program, and the women's basketball team wins the NCAA Division 3 national championship in 1986. Later in 1986, another change of power takes place at the College. President Amsler leaves SSC in August 1987. William Mahaney is appointed Acting President. Rolando Bonachea is named president, replacing James Amsler. Bonachea resigns on May 15, 1989. Kenneth McIlraith becomes Acting President.
