At Salem State College
Frank Keegan is appointed president. The Nursing Department is formed. In 1971, the Women's Caucus organizes and the Veteran's Club is founded as Chi Gamma Iota. Salem State acquires the former St. Chretienne Academy (South Campus) in 1971. The new library opens in 1974. President Keegan leaves SSC, and Vincent Mara is appointed his temporary replacement. In 1975, a Black Studies minor and a Sociology major are introduced, and Edward Penson is appointed president effective August 1. The Athletic Center also opens in 1975. The "Blizzard of '78" shuts down the campus. President Edward Penson resigns. Walter James is named acting president for the remainder of 1978. James Amsler is named president effective January 14, 1979. Winston Thompson becomes the first black vice-president of a Massachusetts state college in 1979.
