U.S. History
John F. Kennedy wins presidential election, youngest and first Catholic to do so. Bay of Pigs invasion fails and Cuban Missile Crisis scares nation - "Duck and cover." Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and Peace Corps founded. John Glenn first American in space. Federal troops sent to Mississippi to enforce integration. Wal-Mart opens. JFK is assassinated on Nov. 2, 1963; Lyndon B. Johnson sworn-in. As thousands demonstrate for civil rights, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivers "I have a dream" speech at Lincoln Memorial. The Thresher sinks off Cape Cod. LBJ is reelected, initiates plans for "War on Poverty" and "Great Society." Civil Rights Bill is passed. Gulf of Tonkin resolution passed after Vietnam attacks US ships and war escalates. Anti-war protests begin. Black Power leader Malcom X is assassinated. NOW and the Black Panthers are formed. Court case leads to Miranda Rights. Pro-civil rights and anti-war demonstrations increase. Both Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy are assassinated. Nixon is elected and begins troop withdrawal from Vietnam. Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon said, "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". Woodstock! The Ford Mustang is formally introduced to the market at a starting price of $2,368. The World's Fair opens in New York. Black students seize the finance building at Northwestern University. The United States performs a nuclear test at a Nevada test site. The 100,000,000th United States' telephone is connected. The United States bombs Hanoi. Ten thousand demonstrate against the war in Vietnam. The United States Congress doubles the presidential salary.
At the State College at Salem
The men's hockey team begins its first formal season in November in 1961. The Arts and Science Building opens and the Business Administration Department is founded. In 1964, women's field hockey and basketball become varsity sports. Salem becomes a resident campus when Bowditch and Peabody Halls open, accommodating 600 students in 1966. WSSC-AM, the student-run radio station, begins broadcasting in 1967. Political debate is heightened in 1967 when a silent protest is held against the war in Vietnam by 78 students and faculty at the base of the Bell Tower. Twenty students counter protested, while 400 spectators watched. In response to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, President Meier requests trustee approval for a plan to enroll 50 African-American students with free tuition, and donate tutorial services from faculty and students. In 1969, State College at Salem becomes Salem State College. President Meier resigns in 1970.
