World Events
England's Edward VII dies and George V is crowned. Revolution in China ends three-century old Qing dynasty. The Portugese monarchy ends. Roald Amundsen is first to reach the South Pole. In Mexico, Diaz is ousted, Madero ascends but is killed in coup, Huerta claims presidency, and Pancho Villa leads uprising. World War I starts after assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. Germans make first airplane raid on London. Lenin leads the Bolshevik revolution. Rebellion breaks out against British rule in Ireland. Czar Nicholas II and family executed by Bolsheviks. Influenza epidemic kills 20 million people worldwide. Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicates, ending WWI. The world's first cannery opens in England to supply food to the navy. War between Turkey and Montenegro breaks out in Albania. Benito Mussolini founds the Fascist party of Italy. Lady Nancy Astor is sworn in as the first female member of Britain's Parliament. The Titanic sinks on April 15, 1912.
U.S. History
Woodrow WilsonDaylight Saving Time is introduced. The Supreme Court breaks-up Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company. U.S. Marines invade Honduras, Cuba, and Nicaragua. Woodrow Wilson wins 1912 election. Congress sets 8-hour workday for federal employees. On April 4, 1916, the U.S. Senate agrees to participate in World War I. Margaret Sanger opens birth control clinic and is arrested. Phone service begins between New York and San Francisco. Puerto Rico made an American territory. Pres. Wilson introduces Fourteen Point peace plan. The first professional golf tournament is held in 1916, and Wrigley Field in Chicago opens. New Mexico and Arizona are admitted as states.
At Salem Normal School
The first boys' basketball team is formed. The first football team is formed; this is the first time that male enrollment is large enough to field a team. Because of growing model school enrollments and the need for more space for the Normal School, the state and city agree to build a Salem Normal School Football Team, 1915new model school (now Horace Mann) on land adjacent to the Normal School building. Kappa Delta Phi, a social fraternity, is organized at the College. The United States enters World War I. Many alumni, both male and female, and most of the male student body leave to join the war effort. The Liberty Club is formed to discuss matters related to the war. The club also sells thrift stamps and Liberty bonds to help the war effort. President Pitman establishes a special class in the model school for retarded children, who are taught by Eleanor Walker.

Dancing is a very popular activity at this time. Students are most likely doing the Castle Walk, the Gotham Gobble, the Grizzly Bear and the Bunny Hug.

Toys and Games
Lincoln Logs, Raggedy Ann, Tinkertoys and Erector Sets all make their first appearance in this decade.
