Bulgaria declares independence. Italian King Victor Emmanuel and the president of Switzerland open the world's longest railroad tunnel (Simplon) linking Iselle, Italy and Brig, Switzerland.
U.S. History
Carrie Nation leads a women's temperance crusade in Kansas. William McKinley is assassinated and Theodore Roosevelt becomes president. Oil is discovered for the first time in Southeast Texas. United Mine Workers five-month coal strike cripples the country. Wright brothers make their first flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Henry Ford founds Ford Motors and introduces the Model T. The Boston Red Sox win the first World Series, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates. San Francisco survives the great earthquake and resulting fire. The National Negro Committee is founded, soon renamed the NAACP. Oklahoma becomes the 46th state. The first split skirt is worn by Mrs. Adolph Landeburg (horse rider). The first U.S. Esperanto club is organized in Boston. The first Rotary Club is organized by four businessmen in Chicago. Las Vegas, NV is founded.
At Salem Normal School
The new Salem Normal School building.Salem's 50th, or semi-centennial, anniversary is celebrated in 1904. President Beckwith dies. Joseph Asbury Pitman is appointed the fifth president of Salem Normal School. The first student council is organized.
