Archeological dig begins on the site of Homer's Troy. A united German empire is declared at end of Franco-Prussian War. H. M. Stanley meets David Livingstone in Tanzania: "Dr. Cezanne paintingLivingstone I presume?" Japan recognizes Korea as independent from China. Mexican general Porfirio Diaz overthrows President Lerdo de Tejada. French Impressionists including Manet, Monet, Cezanne, Degas, Pissaro, and Renoir, hold their first show. Debut of electric street lighting in London. The Vatican proclaims papal infallibility. British imperialism peaks when the South African Republic is annexed and Queen Victoria is named empress of India. Irish nationalist Michael Davitt founds the Irish Land League. French authorities use hot air balloons during siege of Paris. Iceland declares independance from Denmark. Samurai revolt in Japan.
U.S. History
The Fifteenth Amendment is ratified, affirming the right to vote for all citizens. The Great Chicago Fire destroys 18,000 buildings. The Indian Appropriation Act is passed. Alexander Graham BellAlexander Graham Bell holds world's first two-way telephone conversation in Boston, forms Bell Telephone Company. Chief Crazy Horse wins the Battle of Little Bighorn, Montana, wiping out the army of General George Armstrong Custer. Congress passes the Civil Rights Act. The National League baseball plays its first game: Red Stockings 6 vs. Athletics 5. Rutherford B. Hayes inaugurated president after disputed election. Thomas Edison invents the first incandescent electric lamp, the mimeograph, the phonograph, and patents the recording of sound onto discs and cylinders. The Church of Christ, Scientist is founded by Mary Baker Eddy. Susan B. Anthony is arrested. Starting in Lowell, Massachusetts, telephone numbers are issued for the first time. Colorado is the newest U.S. state.
At Salem Normal School
The Broad Street building is expanded. Enrollment exceeds 200 for the first time. Isaac Osbun, the first full-time male teacher, is hired to teach physics and general science.
